- Montrose. The historic heart of gay Houston and still its center of gravity. JR's is the institution: the city's long-running flagship bar with entertainment seven nights a week. Ripcord, Houston's longest-running gay bar (since 1980), owns the bear and leather end of the spectrum and the biggest patio in Montrose. Eagle Houston brings the multi-level indoor-outdoor space and throws the neighborhood's Pride block party. The bars cluster within a short ride of each other, which keeps the night social.
- Beyond Montrose. EaDo and the Heights carry newer, quieter queer-friendly rooms: inclusive cocktail bars with more conversation, less production.
- The institutions. The Montrose Center is Houston's LGBTQ community hub with year-round programming, and Pride Houston anchors June with a downtown festival and a night parade. The low-pressure ways in if bars aren't your thing.
